Antibodies from patients with melioidosis recognize Burkholderia mallei but not Burkholderia thailandensis antigens in the indirect hemagglutination assay.
The indirect hemagglutination assay routinely used to detect antibodies to Burkholderia pseudomallei was modified to detect cross-reactivity of antibodies to B. pseudomallei, B. mallei, and B. thailandensis antigens. We demonstrate a lack of cross-reactivity between B. pseudomallei and B. thailandensis but marked cross-reactivity between B. pseudomallei and B. mallei.

The serological diagnosis of melioidosis is carried out using the indirect hemagglutination assay. We looked at the reactivity of sera from culture-proven cases of melioidosis from north Queensland against antigens derived from Burkholderia pseudomallei, B. thailandensis, and B. cepacia. Cross-reactivity between sera from culture-positive cases of melioidosis and B. thailandensis was demonstrated.
متن کاملEfficacy of indirect ELISA for serodiagnosis of melioidosis using immunodominant antigens from non-pathogenic Burkholderia thailandensis
Melioidosis caused by gram negative bacteria, B. pseudomallei, is a fatal disease in the tropical and sub-tropical regions. However, sporadic cases have been reported in elsewhere. Early detection is imperative to reduce the mortality rate. Serological tests have being substantially developed using recombinant proteins as specific targeted antigens to melioidosis antibodies. In the present stud...
متن کاملBurkholderia thailandensis whole cell antigen cross-reacts with B. pseudomallei antibodies from patients with melioidosis in an immunofluorescent assay.
An immunofluorescent assay (IFAT) using whole cell antigen derived from Burkholderia thailandensis used for detection of total antibodies to Burkholderia pseudomallei, was found to compare favorably with a previous published report on a B. pseudomallei IFAT assay. At a 1:20 cut-off titer, the assay had high sensitivity (98.9%) and satisfactory specificity (92.3%), when tested against sera from ...
متن کاملBurkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei: Melioidosis and Glanders
The genus Burkholderia is currently composed of many species, but only three are notable pathogens for humans or animals: the former cepacia complex (described in Chapter 220) pseudomallei (the agent of melioidosis), and mallei (the agent of equine glanders). All three are aerobic, nonsporulating, straight or slightly curved gram-negative bacilli that were formerly placed in the genus Pseudomonas.
